Newsletters

I recently started writing a newsletter each month to keep the people at our home church in West Seattle up-to-date about what we are doing here in Monterrey.  It just occurred to me that maybe other people would like to read it too, especially since I've been really bad at updating this blog.  I haven't figured out a way to put the whole newsletter on here, so until then, here are a few parts of the November 2010 edition.

Narco Orphans
“Narco Orphans” is the term that is used to describe the children that have lost one or both parents to the drug war that is going on here in Mexico. We recently read a very sad article about these children on Rueters.com. There are roughly 50,000 “narco orphans” to date. It breaks our hearts to think about the future of these children. If someone doesn’t intervene, they are headed for the same future as their parents. They need to know the love of Jesus and to have Him change their lives dramatically. James 1:27 says, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” Please pray with us for how we can help these children.

Women’s Breakfast

We had a Women’s Breakfast at the church on October 30th. There were about 20 women that attended, and we had a delicious breakfast. It included chilaquiles (a traditional Mexican breakfast food), refried beans, fresh fruit, pan dulce, and of course, coffee. The speaker was Jan Kennington, who has been a missionary in Monterrey for 34 years now. She spoke about finding rest in the Lord and trusting Him with our worries and burdens. We were all encouraged by the message she shared. Matthew 11:28-30 says , “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

More to come after I brush up on my technology skills and figure out how to get the newsletter on here.  Any tips are welcome.
