The Clothesline

I never thought I'd hang my clothes to dry....I thought it was way too much work when the dryer does the job just fine.  Well, since we live in Mexico where it's about 90-100 degrees 6 months out of the year, I thought I'd give it a try.  And to my surprise, I love it!  The clothes dry in about 30 minutes and there is something about hanging the clothes that is kind of relaxing.  I put my sunglasses on (because if I don't my eyes are burning from looking up into the sun to hang the clothes) and enjoy the hanging. I've learned a few lessons in the short amount of time that I've been doing this:

1. Don't leave the clothespins on the line when it rains- the wood gets moldy and starts to deteriorate.
2. Don't leave the clothes on the line overnight (it was actually more like 2 nights)- little bugs and spiders like to make their homes in your freshly washed clothes
3. Always hang the clothes inside out- if you don't, the right sides will fade!  As you can see in the picture, this one was taken before I learned this lesson.
4. Don't hang your underwear where everyone can see them (we have a little passageway on the side of our house where you can see part of the backyard)- I try not to hang them in the view of passerbyers.

This is a cute picture! It looks like it should be in a magazine, or framed on a wall as a remembrance of old Mexico.

P.S. It is borderline nifty that you hang your laundry out to dry.

Oh my GOODNESS!(Mom's way to say "OMG"!)Lis thinks Annie made it into "niftiness" here! Grampa Mac is your grampa! and I wanted to let you know Annie that GG will be so tickled to read this! You hanging clothes an lovin' it! She can give you tons of tips! Do you hang them upside down too? Grama has rules for all of the items you want to dry! I love the smell of them out in the breeze! I have also done the blunder of leaving them out for the bugs, even slugs left their tracks a few times and earwigs! They give me the creeps! Taking them down and out wiggles a guy with pincers! or PINCHERS! I like your advice about the underwear too. One time when I was 10-12, I remember helping gg hang out the clothes and then when I went to get them off the line someone had stolen MY underwear! and they were new! rrrrr!!! So not only do you need to watch your doors in mty you need to watch your drawers too! (that is what grama dunc used to call them! Now you got all kinds of family history here. Hey, this is another baby book entry for lil Sam and Em to read about their oh so funny grandparents and great and great greats! I mentioned 4 here I think, can you find them all? Oh and do you like how stiff the bath towels come out? You could think of them as an ofaa (sp??) brush on your skin!

Lis, I'm so honored that you thought the picture looked like it belonged in a magazine! Too bad the scaffolding if in it though. That was for the window project Checo did. Yes, I know, it is quite "nifty" that I hang my clothes to dry.
Mom, thank you for the family history lesson. Yes, Gramma Shirley already let me know that she was ashamed of me for leaving my clothes out over night, as well as leaving the clothespins on the line. She said she used to hate it when people did that. So I would probably be the housewife that everyone talked badly about back in the 50's. I never imagined that I had to take the clothespins off the line if it wasn't raining. Just because Gramma told me that, I took them off the line for Sammy and Emma's birthday party...who knows, maybe the Mexican housewives follow those rules too and I surely didn't want to be the joke of the party for leaving them out.
I had no idea there could be so many rules for this little task!
